The female African White-backed Vulture who was egg bound 3 weeks ago has successfully laid an egg at VulPro. 3 weeks ago we had to rush her to Onderstepoort to try and save both the vulture and her egg. Unfortunately we lost the egg, a devastating blow to our breeding programme, or so we thought. This morning’s egg has been collected, weighed and put into the incubator in VulPro’s Brooder and Incubator room.
The proud mother to be has been given a dummy egg to sit on and “hatch”. Her real egg is due to hatch on the 11th August 2016. We incubate the real eggs to give the egg/chick the best possible chance of surviving and thriving. If everything goes well then we will put their chick back them when it is abut two weeks old and much stronger than a newly hatched chick, especially as these are first time parents.
